“Hidden Workforce”: amid labor shortage, many Polk companies reach out to disabled workers.
Selena MCoy, one of Noah’s Ark residents, started at Once Upon a Child in North Lakeland three months ago tagging, stocking, organizing the sales floor, as well as greeting customers and helping fellow associates behind the counter.
Store owner Melissa Diaz said she is pleased with job candidates such as Selena, who come through her door from employU. The Casselberry-based nonprofit agency evaluates, places and trains disabled workers.
More than 100 employers in Polk County have tapped into the “hidden workforce” to supplement staffing shortages, as thousands of positions remain unfulfilled across the region.
